Cloud 9
by Caryl Churchill
An hilarious take-no-prisoners assault on hypocrisy, Caryl Churchill's Cloud Nine is a whirlwind tour from 1880's Africa to 2005 London, confronting colonial and sexual repression with a gender-bent cast of characters who traverse 100 years while aging only 25. Cross-casting over both sexual and racial lines, society's rigid expectations and stereotypes are brought into sharp focus as the characters struggle to fit their assigned roles in the first act in Victorian Africa. By the second act, set in 2005 London, the characters have started to claim their identities as they endeavor to find themselves in the changing sexuality of our time.
"...Miss Churchill has found a theatrical method that is easily as dizzying as her theme. Not only does she examine a cornucopia of sexual permutations--from heterosexual adultery right up to bisexual incest-- but she does so with a wild array of dramatic styles and tricks....Miss Churchill, as you might gather is one deft writer." - Frank Rich, The New York Times
A portrayal of victorian standards imposed on today's society, shows how one family would react with the same problems in different periods of history. This comedy from the Fresher's of SUTG shows the high standard of things to come from this years newcomers.
