A kind reminder from all our writers that a curfew is enforced in the city. Any members of the public found outside of their homes after 9pm will be forcibly detained and thoroughly questioned. Please ensure all members of your family are safely within your doors and all curtains are drawn. Murder in Broad Daylight

Monday 22nd January

Reports from the police and the army have been flying around the office, what one says the other denies, the only clear thing anyone knows is that Governor Shaw is dead. This report has pieced together all the reliable information at hand and we hope to clear any confusion in our readers’ minds. Governor Shaw was assassinated.

Governor Shaw’s press team have yet to release a statement. We at The Beat however, from eyewitness accounts as well as official reports, have managed to piece together the series of events that led to the good Governor’s death.

It began early on the morning of February the 5th. As usual he awoke at 5am and along with his bodyguard began his routine of exercise which concluded in a run through the city near his home. This predictability is what led to his downfall. Unbeknownst to him, the assassin had watched him for days, tracking his every moment to find the perfect time to strike. The Governor returned home safely and ate his breakfast unknowing of his fate.

Every working day, the governor would reach his office and there his bodyguard would leave him, but almost like clockwork at 11am he would leave the building, unguarded for a maximum of ten minutes. Every day he would go to the street stall and there would purchase a coffee before retreating into the building. Here the assassin struck. Here they enacted the heinous crime, in the middle of the day, surrounded by civilians. The assassin drew a pistol and put two rounds into the governor, the first brought him to the ground and the second was aimed at the back of his skull. Amongst the ensuing chaos caused by the shots, the assassin disappeared into a waiting vehicle.

The police have been unable to locate the perpetrator with only a vague description to assist them. All we currently know is the assassin was a dark haired woman of middling height.

A follow up article with more detail shall be published once the police give a statement. In the meanwhile The Beat shall be reporting on Governor Shaw’s achievements through his life and will be present at his funeral to pay our respects and interview those directly affected by this cowardly act.

Death Toll Rising

Monday 22nd January

A continuation of yesterday's initial report, we bring you the most up to date information on the disaster of the 2nd Army's counterattack on the recently captured North African coastline. Official reports claim a well organised attack rebuffed by strong enemy encampments but the numbers tell the true tale. Thousands upon thousands of soldiers have been lost in the manoeuvre to enemy fire amongst the sunken ships, the actual figure is still unclear. What is clear is the utter failure of the military strategists in charge of this enormous operation.

The government assures The Beat that any supposed occurrences in the Mediterranean were 'planned in detail and extensively modelled with the utmost secrecy'. If this is the case the only conclusion our writers can come to is that either the enemy is far stronger, with greater tactical skills than we could have imagined, or our government's definition of 'utmost secrecy' is not quite what they believe it to be.

In any case, the majority of the 2nd Army is being recalled from the frontline, their remaining soldiers will be rotated and their numbers bolstered by those still in training. The real story will only be uncovered when our journalists interview soldiers and government officials who are at this moment on their way home. Be sure to read their responses in the coming weeks as we finalise and discover the truth.

Trust No One

Monday 22nd January

Dark days for us. All of us. Every reader has lost friends and family while every writer sheds a tear for each article on the war we write. We flinch at the words of destruction we force you to read and the news of fresh horrors our enemies create. I am truly sorry for what you are about to read but you must be told because all of you out there, the ordinary people, are the only ones who can help. I am sorry but your enemy is not only across the border, some of them are here. Some of them live amongst us, unnoticed in the crowds. It might be your neighbour, it might be your friend, how well do you truly know your parents? All we know is that they are out there, every one of them seems normal, they have friends, families, children just like you. But they are not like us, they are our enemy as much as the soldier who aims the gun at your son. Proof? We have all the proof we need, the assassination of General Keer, the attack on the presidential convoy, the precise bombing of key bases in the city. All of these and more needed intelligence privy only to members of our society, perhaps even readers of this paper. There are traitors amongst us and we need your help to stamp the fires of betrayal out. We will break them for their crimes but you must fight them first. The Department of Internal Affairs is offering a substantial reward to anyone with relevant information but we at The Beat are confident that the image of our soldiers, bravely fighting on the front line, will be enough to for you to come forward. Your words can save lives. Stand together, stand strong.

Hearts of Terror

Monday 22nd January

The latest news of our struggles in the East; Our Eastern Brigades have been forced to retreat to the valleys and clefts of Altyn Emel as the enemy force their way northwards. A prepared tactical retreat ensured minimal casualties of our soldiers, however, the 3rd Battalion under Major Carl F. Whitty was entrapped by enemy forces. Under heavy fire with no chance of air support, Major Whitty had no choice but to surrender. An unknown number of the surviving members of the 3rd Battalion have been taken captive and will undoubtedly be held in one of the many secure POW camps the enemy keep hidden.

The Beat have had exclusive access to a report on one of the few POW camps that have been found and what was discovered only proves the brutality of those who seek to conquer us. Our soldiers live perilous lives under the thumbs of their jailers. Prisoners are forced to labour with no food or water for uncounted hours. They are beaten to within an inch of their lives at absolutely no provocation. Rooms full of instruments of torture with gleeful guards have driven some prisoners mad. Rescuers found mass shallow graves near the camps where man, woman and child lie with no reverence or ceremony. Some of the soldiers that were rescued are no luckier than some of their fallen comrades. We interview family members as well as the survivors themselves to bring you stories from inside the fences.

I don’t know if this is the dream or whether what I went through was all a nightmare. You can’t imagine the things they did to us. We have to fight them; we can’t let monsters like that win. One night they woke us all up by…Vivan, 33, decorated veteran
